University of Central Lancashire's MA in Publishing

The award-winning MA Publishing course at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) is designed to provide students with the vocational and practical skills vital for a successful career in publishing.

In 2020 we celebrated 10 years of teaching publishing at the University. We have a dedicated team of lecturers who are committed to supporting students to achieve on the course and we have a proven track record of providing students with the skills and knowledge needed for the workplace.

On this course you’ll get the unique opportunity to learn about our business, UCLan Publishing, which publishes high quality Children’s and Young Adult books for retail: There will be many opportunities to get involved with the business and to meet the professionals who support us and our authors.

We are recognised on both sides of the fence: in academia and in industry. We won the prestigious Times Higher Award for Innovation in the Arts (2018) and in industry we won the Nick Robinson Newcomer Award at the Independent Publishing Awards (2019).

What you will learn from us:

  • You will learn from our entrepreneurial and innovative approach to business and publishing for which we are recognised and award winners.

  • We have worked hard to build our reputation and to deliver the best teaching and learning opportunities for students. We have been doing this for a decade.

  • There will be opportunity to learn from, and work with, the content from our business and this is something that is unique and only accessible to students at UCLan.

Student testimonial:

When I first started my MA in Publishing at UCLan I was filled to the brim with anxieties. Was I making the right decision? Was I changing to the right career? Was I ready for university studies again after what feels like an age since my undergrad?

Well, the answer is yes. To all of those questions.

From the first lectures, every anxiety I had was comfortably thrown completely out of the window! Whether it was learning about all the current issues facing the publishing industry, understanding all of the intricacies of children’s publishing, facing the seemingly daunting yet weirdly exciting prospect of tackling an actual major publishing project or picking up new editorial skills, it was all incredibly exciting to make a start on each and every module.

The thing that helps all of these things gel together and what really makes the course worthwhile is that UCLan has its own publishing house alongside everything. The highlight so far has been being involved in decision-making within the business and the signing of a confidentiality agreement added that extra sprinkling of excitement… On top of that, the sheer amount of guest speakers who kindly offer up their time to come and share their experiences with us is very heartwarming. The one thing they all seem to have in common is that they know A LOT and they REALLY love sharing it all with us. (Stephen, student from the 2020/2021 cohort).
